Let me start by stating the obvious, this is not your everyday hybrid. The Scorpion, produced by Texas based Ronn Motor Company is a very complex hybrid supercar, maybe too complex.
The Scorpion is powered by a mix of hydrogen and gasoline. The hydrogen is created onboard by actually fracturing water molecules from a water supply in the car. That "home made" hydrogen is then mixed with gasoline at a ratio of 1:3 to produce fuel consumption of 40 mpg.
I have to hand it to Ronn Maxwell (CEO of Ronn Motor Company) for dreaming up this hybrid. However, the technology involved seems a little too complex to ever meet any long term milestones for hybrid technology, not to mention the cost will probably be astronomic. No performance figures yet, but the reality is, anyone who would own a car like this would probably not clock enough miles in the first place to justify really needing this hybrid technology.
As the folks at Top Gear said, "...a Texas outfit that simultaneously deserves a slap and a biscuit for its blind optimism."Source: Top Gear
